For the first time ever, I'm doing Janowrimo this year! I'm super excited, in case the exclamation point didn't get that across adequately. I haven't written all that much since November, so this will be a great push to finish my current WIP. Yayyyyy.

I'm super excited because around the holidays I finally got my motivation back, and I've been raring to get writing ever since. I often set a 2,000 word a day goal for myself, but it's nice to have a monthly goal you're heading...

A PSA for the Holidays

Posted by Lisa K Houghton on December 21, 2014 at 10:05 AM Comments comments (0)

This holiday season, here's my PSA:

I hope you read a romance novel.

Seriously, I do. Because the world can seem scary and cold and cruel, especially at this time of year. We all watch the news because the best version of ourselves wants to be part of an informed electorate, a voice for change, or at the very least an engaging dinner party guest. But as real and true as that is, so is love and joy and, let's be real, sex. So read a romance novel.

All I Want for Christmas

Posted by Lisa K Houghton on December 15, 2014 at 9:15 PM Comments comments (0)

All I want for Christmas is a kickass book deal. Or do I?

When I think about what a book deal means to me, I think of credibility, of childhood dreams, but mostly I think of time. I think of it as the first step in my dream career, a career where I can support myself with my writing so that I can spend all day, every day, doing the thing that makes me the happ...

Fake Pitch Vomit

So, I had so much fun today randomly writing a couple #FakePitchMAS tweets that I thought I'd share my comic genius with you all (hi, mom) even more by word-vomiting some parody twitter pitches. Here goes nothing.

1. Erotic picture books for children. Wildly unpopular when it was self-pubbed, and now looking for an agent. You're welcome. #FakePitch

2. Struggling writer loses it and burns down a library. An existential exploration of the artist's s...

Twitter Pitching for Fun and Profit

Tomorrow is #PitMad! I'm pretty excited, because I love a good twitter pitch. Let's be real, who doesn't love the idea of having to write 140 characters instead of the Dreaded Query? And not only that, agents REQUEST. You don't even have to send your little baby into their inbox, shivering in fear until it's spit back to you. Upgrade or rejection? Upgrade or rejection?

Okay, that second part does still happen with twitter pitches, and a...

(Writing) Things I'm Thankful For

Posted by Lisa K Houghton on November 30, 2014 at 12:55 AM Comments comments (0)

Although I celebrated Thanksgiving in October like the good Canadian girl that I am, all this thanksfulness going around has inspired me to write about what I'm thankful for, writing-related of course. A little gratitude is never a bad thing, especially in a sometimes difficult and frustrating industry. So, here we go:

1. I'm thankful for the people around me who respect the time I take to write, and who really believe that I can and...

This week, the song I'm writing to is "Strange Girl" by The Zolas. I'm not sure if I'm the strange girl, or my MC is. Both of us, probably.

I've been testing the waters with a few new CP's, which is really exciting, but other than that MY WIP IS KICKING ME IN THE LADY BUSINESS. Seriously. I'm at an awkward point in the story, and I got out of my writing groove while I was super involved in PitchWars and subsequent querying of that project. I did fin...

Euphoria and Despair a.k.a. Querying

Posted by Lisa K Houghton on November 20, 2014 at 7:55 PM Comments comments (0)

I'm in the query trenches, guys. And everyone who's here with me, or who has ever been, knows how hard this can be. It's a roller-coaster of rejection, requests, obsesssive inbox refreshing, and endless self-doubt.

First, you send out the queries, and that alone is stressful enough.

Then, you ...

A confession about NaNoWriMo

Posted by Lisa K Houghton on November 17, 2014 at 12:45 AM Comments comments (0)

So, this is my first year doing NaNoWriMo, and I have to admit it - it's not going well. I love the idea of it. I often write 2,000 words a day or more (with a day job), so I figured it would be no problem. I was wrong. I love the community aspect, and the support and accountability everyone gives each other on twitter etc. I even have a WIP that I'm excited about.

The thing is....the words just aren't coming. There are so many things going on in my life right now, personal and writing-...
